Exhibition Design
Chennai Photo Biennale / 2019

In 1855, the establishment of the first photography department in South East Asia at the then Government School of Industrial Arts—now the Government College of Fine Arts, Chennai—marked a pivotal moment in the region's artistic evolution. This initiative played a crucial role in shaping the Indo-Saracenic Architecture movement, serving as a foundation for our exhibition design concept.

Our design seeks to foster a social dialogue that resonates with the historical significance of this institution, making it more accessible and relatable to contemporary audiences. We envision a unified spatial rhythm that harmonizes with the distinct artistic expressions of the diverse artists featured in the exhibition.

In contrast to the existing monolithic structure, our installation serves as an engaging device that invites visitors to fully immerse themselves in the artworks while navigating through the space. The design emphasizes fluidity, allowing movement that feels as organic as a stroll through a city adorned with arches. This visual ambiguity and spatial continuity create an intimate experience, punctuated by moments of pause that encourage reflection and connection with the art.
